With a portfolio of striking modern images, and extended captions, this book celebrates the legacy of the canal pioneers, viewing their achievements in the context of the burgeoning industrial revolution.

The main body of photographs is preceded by a set of illustrated biographical notes of prominent early engineers. The concept of ‘pioneers’ is carried forward to later triumphal engineering, culminating with the Falkirk Wheel. LTC Rolt, who inspired the conservation movement in the 1950s, is also considered a pioneer, as too are inexperienced holidaymakers making a narrowboat debut!

Although not a comprehensive guide, Canal Pioneers offers a wide-ranging set of views of many of Britain’s canals at the beginning of the twenty-first century.
